Assessing non-chemical weeding strategies through mechanistic modelling of blackgrass (Alopecurus myosuroides Huds.) dynamics
2010
; Because of environmental and health safety issues, it is necessary to develop strategies that do not rely on herbicides to manage weeds. Introducing temporary grassland into annual crop rotations and mechanical weeding are the two main features that are frequently used in integrated and organic cropping systems for this purpose. To evaluate the contribution of these two factors in interaction with other cropping system components and environmental conditions, the present study updated an existing biophysical model (i.e. AlomySys) that quantifies the effects of cropping system on weed dynamics. Based on previous experiments, new sub-models were built to describe the effects on plant survi…
The metabolic status of internal intensive care patients as indicated by 3-methylhistidine excretion and nitrogen balance
1984
Abstract The metabolic status of 15 intensive care patients receiving a standardized total parenteral nutrition regimen was followed up to 15 days immediately after admission by measuring 3-methylhistidine, total nitrogen, and creatinine excretion. The average 3-methylhistidine excretion was within the normal range during the first 3 days, rising on day 4 and reached a maximum of 70% above normal values on day 5. It declined to within normal range thereafter in most of the patients. Mean values for creatinine excretion remained relatively constant within the normal range throughout the study. During all days 3-methylhistidine was negatively correlated with N-balance. It is concluded that th…
Verwertbarkeit verschiedener Cysteinderivate bei langfristiger parenteraler Ernährung
1989
Utilization of cysteine derivatives for parenteral nutrition was established by means of nitrogen balance of growing rats. N,N-bis-acetylcystine and bisacetyl-glycyl-cystine were not utilized as substrates. N-acetylcysteine, glutathione disulfide, and L-thiazolidine-(4)-carboxylic acid gave evidence as suitable cysteine sources for parenteral nutrition.
Zum Problem der Stickstoffbilanz beim Keimwachstum in Stabilisatoren
1960

LACKNER: DUDRICK emphasized the attempts to improve the immune competence It has been shown by Dr. CARPENTIER et al. from Belgium—(2)—that in improving the nitrogen balance he could directly increase the lymphocyte function which was measured in vitro by means of the lymphocyte transformation test.
Glutamine transport by the blood-brain barrier: a possible mechanism for nitrogen removal
1998
Glutamine and glutamate transport activities were measured in isolated luminal and abluminal plasma membrane vesicles derived from bovine brain endothelial cells. Facilitative systems for glutamine and glutamate were almost exclusively located in luminal-enriched membranes. The facilitative glutamine carrier was neither sensitive to 2-aminobicyclo(2,2,1)heptane-2-carboxylic acid inhibition nor did it participate in accelerated amino acid exchange; it therefore appeared to be distinct from the neutral amino acid transport system L1. Two Na-dependent glutamine transporters were found in abluminal-enriched membranes: systems A and N. System N accounted for approximately 80% of Na-dependent glu…
